The scale of space

How does one quantify space? The space between two black holes, objects, people... How does one perceive this space? How does one understand the scale of space? Is it the simple distance, the volume, or are there more dimensions to it?
This painting is an attempt to answer some of these questions, through colors, strokes and symbolism.

Reading the artwork

The background is simple white in contrast to the dark, dense universe within the oval. A smoky effect is created along the periphery of the oval that blurs the hard edge between the two spaces.

A small white spot-untouched by the colors, is seen towards the right of the oval. Quiet, subtle and lost... somewhere alone in the deep universe. There is always that one thing, that one person in our lives like this white dot. It is far from reach, but is we all long for it to be closer. If only the path of the stars were different.

The idea is also to represent the distance in a direct way of three dimensional understanding. So, we look into a telescope. To understand better, to see clearer. The oval being the view inside of a telescope.

Looking at the picture as an eye, one sees the subtle figure within the eye. The reflection of yourself in your beloved's eye. This is a different kind of space, probably the kind that only we, living creatures can perceive.

The whole picture in a way zooms in and out, oscillating between yourself and the scale of space that you perceive.
